About James Hulton
H. James Hulton III
H. James Hulton III is a seasoned freelance copywriter, copy editor, and communications strategist with deep experience in leadership-driven, mission-focused organizations.
Jim spent 15 years as a chamber of commerce executive, where he handled everything from member and volunteer engagement to board-level meetings and messaging, stakeholder communications, and public outreach. That experience gave him an insider’s understanding of nonprofit governance, public accountability, and the day-to-day realities organizations face when communications fall to already-overloaded staff.
Before that, Jim served six and a half years as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force during wartime. The role sharpened his leadership skills, strategic thinking, and ability to communicate with clarity and confidence—especially in high-pressure, dangerous environments.
Jim has worked extensively with non-profits and for-profit small businesses, helping them clarify their message, strengthen trust, and communicate with purpose. His portfolio includes website content, email campaigns, regularly published newsletters, news releases, grant narratives, and white papers.
Today, Jim works as a communications partner—not just a copywriter. He helps organizations build and sustain messaging that is clear, credible, and consistent over time. Clients value him not only for what he writes, but for his calm, collaborative approach and his ability to step in as a reliable extension of their team.
Nonprofits vs. Small Businesses (Clear Differentiation)
For Nonprofits:
I understand nonprofit governance, board dynamics, public accountability, and the responsibility that comes with communicating on behalf of a mission. I help nonprofits translate complex work into clear, accessible messaging—for members, donors, partners, boards, and the public—without losing credibility or nuance.
For Small Businesses:
I help small businesses communicate clearly and professionally as they grow—without sounding corporate or overproduced. Whether you need sharper web copy, consistent email messaging, or help telling your story to customers and stakeholders, I bring structure, clarity, and an outside perspective that saves time and reduces friction.
